Abstract (EN)

Patchwork has always given voice to America, through the personal notes, historical inscriptions or political statements which appear on its quilts. Within the vast range of artefacts from a folk tradition whose vitality has proven itself through the course of time, these messages are variously embroidered, cut into the fabric or written in ink, depending on their functions. This study aims to decipher the various texts that can be found on the surface of textile works expressing the fabric of a nation. It focuses on some of the main orientations of patchwork, notably in the fields of domesticity, ideology, and therapy.
